Derided as Luddites for years, the Amish are anything but backward. They are better characterized as surprisingly prosperous, remarkably prolific — and deeply misunderstood. The Amish Originally Hailed From Switzerland, France The Amish began arriving in America in large numbers in the mid th century; Franco Folini A commitment to finding their own religious path caused strife for the Amish from their very beginnings as Swiss Anabaptists in the s. After many had migrated north to the French region of Alsace, a schism around gave the Amish their unique identity. But after the French Revolution, a drive toward universal citizenship, and along with that compulsory military service, created new problems for the Amish. But Ohio is today home to more Amish than anyplace else in the world, with the highest concentration in Holmes County in the northeast-central part of the state. While most Amish call Pennsylvania and a variety of Midwestern states home, communities have been established as far and wide as Maine, Florida, Texas and Wyoming. Historically, the Amish have led agrarian lives, but today, as their numbers have grown, they have established themselves in construction, furniture making, crafts and tourism-related enterprises, among many other occupations.

You know the assumption I have in mind, dear reader. These days hate has roughly the same role in popular culture that original sin has in traditional Christian theology. If you want to slap the worst imaginable label on an organization, you call it a hate group. If you want to push a category of discourse straight into the realm of the utterly unacceptable, you call it hate speech. As it turns out, we have a very good idea what happens in this case, because a first-rate example of the phenomenon finally completed its historical trajectory on the edge of living memory.
The example I have in mind is the attitude, prevalent in the English-speaking world from the middle of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth, that sex was the root of all evil. The Victorian horror of sexual desire has been mocked so mercilessly in recent decades, and not without reason, that a lot of people these days have apparently forgotten just how seriously it was taken at the time. During its heyday, people in Britain and America loudly proclaimed exactly the same attitudes toward sex that their great-grandchildren now display toward hate.
The sentiment was certainly there. By the way, yes, I know that comparing current attitudes toward hate with Victorian attitudes toward sex will inspire instant pushback from a good many of my readers.
It is written in His Word. And it is all going accordingly, just as He said. I do not serve that which you serve, nor do you serve him whom I serve. Nor am I going to serve that which you serve, nor are you going to serve Him whom I serve: You shall have your religion and I shall have my religion.

Impatient with the pace of the Protestant Reformation, youthful reformers in Zurich, Switzerland, outraged religious authorities by baptizing each other in January The rebaptism of adults was then a crime punishable by death. Baptism, in the dissidents’ view, was only meaningful for adults who had made a voluntary confession of faith. Because they were already baptized as infants in the Catholic Church, the radicals were dubbed Anabaptists, or rebaptizers, by their opponents.
Anabaptism, also known as the Radical Reformation, spread through the Cantons of Switzerland, Germany, and the Netherlands. The rapid spread of Anabaptist groups threatened civil and religious authorities. Anabaptist hunters soon stalked the Reformers.
