Relief at the Temple of Abydos Share: Abydos was the epicenter for the pharaoh’s cult worship of Osiris and became the most important burial center in ancient Egypt. Here, Seti I raised a glorious temple dedicated to Osiris and a pantheon of other gods that remains a beautiful and unique central point to this necropolis. For travelers interested in the artistry of the Pharaonic period, the Temple of Seti I’s colorful wall and ceiling paintings and sculpted column work are a highlight of any Nile temple itinerary and shouldn’t be missed. Abydos is kilometers north of Luxor and can easily be visited as a day trip from the city. Built of limestone and laid out on three levels, Abydos’ Temple of Seti I is unusual in many respects from other Egyptian temples. The front part of the temple is thus divided into seven individual temples, each with its own doorway, and the chambers behind the chapels are not arranged behind one another, as in other temples, but side by side. You enter the humongous temple complex from the northeast, through the First Pylon, now in ruins, which leads into the largely destroyed First Courtyard. The First Courtyard leads you into the better preserved Second Courtyard.

Excavations have revealed important information about the Archaic period B. Josef Wegner discovering an ancient mayor’s house at Abydos, summer Excavation of the newly discovered temple of Thutmose III formed an important component of the archaeological research which the North Abydos project carried out in the spring of The small Eighteenth Dynasty structure was discovered in the course of the previous season of fieldwork, and our continuing excavation of the site has focused on articulating the unusual architectural plan of the temple, and recording the numerous fragments of beautifully carved and painted scenes and texts which once covered its limestone walls.

This research will ultimately enable us to reconstruct the program of the temple’s relief decoration and to understand the function of this significant structure within the larger context of the cult of Osiris at Abydos. In , an expedition led by the Penn Museum’s Josef Wegner discovered the tomb of a previously unknown pharaoh at the southern Egyptian site of Abydos.

Image courtesy North Abydos Votive Zone Project A wealth of new discoveries, from animal mummies linked to the jackal god and human remains to an enigmatic statue, are revealing the secrets of an ancient holy place in Egypt once known as the “Terrace of the Great God. She was typically portrayed as a man in statues, but this one, giving a nod to femininity, had a petite waist. The discoveries were made during one field season this past summer by a team led by Mary-Ann Pouls Wegner, director of the excavation and a professor at the University of Toronto.

The findings offer insight into Abydos, a site that was considered a holy place, Pouls Wegner said at a recent meeting of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities in Toronto, Canada. Ancient Egyptians believed that the god of the underworld , Osiris, was buried there as well and there was a tomb at the site that they deemed to be his. According to legend, the god’s brother, Set, killed Osiris and his wife Isis, then gathered his remains and brought him back to life. Their son, Horus, is said to have fought Set in battle.

A temple dedicated to Osiris was also constructed at Abydos and every year, in a great procession, the Egyptians would carry an image of Osiris from the temple to his tomb, where it was kept overnight with rituals being performed. The procession ended with the image of Osiris returning to the temple to great fanfare. Exploring the terrace This procession was so popular that Egyptians, both royal and private individuals, built chapels lining the route so that they could take part in the event for eternity.

It had been hypothesized that these chapels gradually encroached on the route, despite a death penalty in place for doing so. According to this theory the more recent chapels would be nearest the route while earlier ones would be farther back. The team’s discovery of an early offering chapel dating back more than 3, years, located close to the processional route, suggests this wasn’t the case.

Morgane Croissant Aug 23, No one travels to Egypt for the beaches or the wildlife — everybody comes for the ancient sites. From the Pyramids at Giza to the Valley of the Kings and the Luxor Temple, the country is filled with immense, millennia-old structures often shrouded in mystery. But, despite being the objects of myths and legends, these beautiful, ancient monuments are far from being kept secret.

These crowds often take away from the amazement one should feel when looking at these structures. Her knowledge of working in the desert and overall archaeological experience took her to Egypt five times to work on a large archaeological project project run by the NYU Institute of Fine Arts archaeological research program in Abydos. She also had the chance to travel around Egypt several times and visit many lesser-known sites with immense historical and cultural value.

The archaeological and textual data from the area within the Enclosure is fragmentary and difficult to interpret. Petrie recorded the relative elevations of the artifacts that he recovered, and related these objects to the architectural remains by means of their relative elevation. The architectural remains themselves are difficult to interpret, and some controversy exists as to whether they comprise the remains of the main temple of Osiris-Khentyimentiu or a series of chapels dedicated to the kas “spirits” or “life forces” of individual kings and elite individuals.

The main settlement area of ancient Abydos, like that of the modern region, probably lay to the local east of the Enclosure toward the canal system that linked the site with the Nile. In the Old Kingdom ca.

Covering a vast area, Abydos has offered up many historical sites and much of the area still remains uncovered. This is the principle tourist attraction of the Abydos site, and in fact much of Abydos is not open to the travelling public. The settlement itself has a rich history dating back as far as BC and pre-dynastic Egypt. This led to Abydos becoming one of the most important cities in the region and it became the burial site of many of the ruling elite.

Abydos continued to be an important city and site of pilgrimage right up to the late Roman period and ruins have been found from throughout the long history of the site. Many visitors will visit Abydos – along with Dendera – either by train or organised tour from Luxor. This site also features as one of our top ten tourist attractions of Egypt. Many tour operators will offer guided tour options to Abydos from Luxor. It is also possible to get the train from Luxor to Abydos and then take a tourist police transport to the site.

Entry to Abydos costs 25LE. Student discounts are available.

It is the symbol of his backbone and his body in general. The Djed is represented on two ivory pieces found at Helwan dating to the first dynasty, evidence that the use of this symbol is at least that old. Alan Gardiner describes the Djed as a column imitating a bundle of stalks tied together and ascribes to it the meaning ‘be stable’ and ‘enduring’.

Other possible interpretations are that it represents a segment of the backbone of Osiris, a tree trunk with its branches lopped, or the four supports of the sky combined as one pillar. The Legend of Osiris told to us by Plutarch describes the death and resurrection of the Osiris. His body becomes concealed in the trunk of a magnificent sized tree.

The idea of the jumping puzzle is that only one person can be on top of a platform or that platform turns red and goes down into the toxic water. Temple of Osiris shines in its cooperative mode. That’s not merely down to the added excitement of shooting crocodile men and oversized beetles with a pal, but more to do with the intricate teamwork the game’s puzzles call for.

Each character has a unique skill or two, from firing climbable grappling hooks to creating magical platforms to bridge gaps, and using these skills in well-timed tandem is key to progressing. A player’s life is literally in the hands of their friend when dangling on the end of a rope, and the constant stream of well-conceived traps and problems keep you on your toes. The game can of course be played solo too, but it’s not quite as fun blaming a failed puzzle attempt on a conveniently placed rollable, switch-pressing boulder as it is on your clumsy mate.

Though the puzzles are the high-point, Lara’s twin-stick shooting battles are great too.
